Migration and shutdown of Terrascope virtual machines

Shutdown of old Virtual Machines as from 30 November 2024

In the interest of keeping our platform up to date and secure, we will be deploying new versions of all existing Terrascope Virtual Machines and retiring the old ones after the 30th of November 2024.

The old user VMs will be shut down and permanently removed starting the 30th of November 2024.

We advise all our users to check whether they still need access to their stored data. Please log in and ensure you back up any important data before the 30th of November 2024.
You can use the ‘Private’ and ‘Public’ folders for long term backup – they will remain accessible even after your VM is deactivated (via FTP or Jupyter Notebooks).

Be aware that, just like the old VMs, this new VM is not backed up. Data kept only on the local disk cannot be retrieved in case of catastrophic failure or removal. In the new VMs, you can also use the ‘Private’ and ‘Public’ folders for long term backup.

What's changed?

Here's a list of some of the most significant differences with the old CentOS 7 virtual machine:

  • AlmaLinux 9.3
  • ‘sudo’ rights are no longer granted due to security considerations.
  • ‘R’ is no longer supported.
  • ‘GRASS GIS’ is no longer supported.
  • IDEs are no longer installed out-of-the-box.
  • Important Python changes:
     - Python interpreter updated to 3.11.
     - Python no longer has additional libraries pre-installed.
(Usage of Python virtual environments, conda and docker are recommended).
  • GDAL has been updated to version 3.8.4.
  • QGIS has been updated to version 3.34.
  • ESA SNAP toolbox has been updated to version 10.0.0.
