Atmospheric measurements with high spatio-temporal resolution
Sentinel-5 Precursor is designed to observe and monitor various atmospheric components and air quality every day. With an unprecedented resolution of 3.5 × 5.5 km2, the satellite and its on-board Tropospheric Ozone Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) can detect air pollution and its sources at sub-urban scale. This data is suitable for:
- monitoring the amount of air pollution
- assessing its impact on vegetation and public health
- improving air quality models
- issuing aviation warnings
- tracking ship emissions
Nitrogen Dioxide
- Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a major air pollutant resulting from industrial process and traffic fuel combustion
Carbon Monoxide
- Carbon monoxide (CO), an air pollutant formed by fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning processes
Formaldehyde
- Formaldehyde (HCHO), and intermediate gas that eventually leads to CO2 formation and which indicates emissions by vegetation, fire, traffic and industrial sources activity
